Our Story
Thriving African Families was born out of the lived experiences of our founder, Dokun Nochirionye, fondly known as Mrs Noch.
Arriving in Canada in 2019 as a first-generation African immigrant from Nigeria, she faced a multitude of challenges familiar to many in our community.
With a young family, she navigated the upheaval of the COVID-19 pandemic, culture shock, multiple life changes intersecting at once, balancing family life in a new context, career pivots, the “strange” complexities of the healthcare system, the hurdles of de-professionalization, weathering and precarious work.
She encountered subtle microaggressions, overt discrimination, and battled the difficulties of integrating into a new culture and community.
Despite these barriers, her personal struggles and triumphs transformed into a mission for empowerment and social change advocacy.
With the leadership of Mrs Noch, over 200 hours of volunteer work in culturally appropriate workshops and seminars since 2020, the groundwork for what would become Thriving African Families had begun and officially registered as a nonprofit in 2024.
Mrs Noch’s journey is a testament to resilience, and her vision is clear: to “bridge the gap” for families of African heritage by providing training, resources, support, and a strong sense of community that champions equity and inclusion for people of African heritage.
